About Our Trip
Em and I are taking off on a year long trip to South America and hope to keep you up to date on the various events of our trip.
Our primary itenerary is Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. We will be traveling for three months through these countries and then we will ‘settle down’ for most of the remaining time in the city/country that appealed to us the most. From there I’m sure we’ll do some side trips, maybe into Chile or Brazil…we’ll see.
Our reasons for going? Well, it is primarily driven by something that I have been wanting to do for a long long time.
It has always been a dream of mine to become fluent in another language. The most important and successfull way to this is through complete immersion. So, we’re going with Spanish. I personally have a fairly strong background in Spanish. I took four years in highschool and a semester in college ….. which I have totally forgotten. Also, for Em, who is convinced that she is challenged in the area of language acquisition, I believe Spanish would be a simpler language to pick up. The biggest reason, though is how prevalent the language is. By learning Spanish, we will now have access to most of the continent of South America, Mexico, Central America, Spain and other places. And of course in California, it is spoken everywhere.
And other reasons for going:
Neither of us has been to South America so it is a new place to explore, and having a whole year to do so…..awesome.
It’s not all going to be fun and games though. Once we find a place to stay I have to really focus on school. I will be taking Computer Science courses online through Chico State as I work towards my Master’s in Artificial Intelligence. Em will be probably teaching English in a language school and we’ll both be trying to learn as much Spanish as possible.
So, that’s that! Stay tuned! If you want to receive emails whenever we submit a new post, you can subscribe to the blog.
